JAPAN PHOTOBOOK / CASE NOTES
How do you keep a journey beyond the photographs?
Three weeks in Japan. A book to return to.
01 / THE IDEA
Keep the feeling.
Not just the photos.
The starting point was a shared journey through Japan in September 2025. Osaka, the art islands, Kyoto and Tokyo each had a different rhythm. The book gives those places—and the people moving between them—a form that can be revisited together.
It is made for family, with enough context to bring someone along who was not there. The small scenes matter as much as the landmarks: a street at dusk, a meal, a turn in the day that stayed with us.

02 / THE EXPLORATION
Finding the rhythm
between pages.
Editing is where a collection of images becomes a journey. Photographs are grouped by place and experience, then paired with short narratives. A busy sequence can lead into one quiet photograph; the next spread can bring the story forward again.
The visual language stays restrained: generous white space, clear typography and room for the photographs. The open-book mockup explores how that pacing might feel as a physical object, using pages from the current reading edition.

03 / WHERE IT LANDED
A journey,
ready to revisit.
The current result is a reading edition of Japan — Zwischen Bühne und Alltag. The photographs and writing now live in one continuous editorial sequence, with a cover that keeps the title simple and lets a moment from the journey speak.
The next step is the physical edition: checking the final pages, paper and print finish. The mockups throughout this page imagine that future object on a creative studio desk, using the current cover and a selection of spreads from across the journey.

THE ANSWER, SO FAR
Give the journey a rhythm you can return to.
Photographs, place-based stories and quiet details became a designed reading edition. The sequence carries the trip across spreads; the physical-book images explore how that edition could feel in print.
04 / THE GALLERY
A little closer.
A little further away.
Two final perspectives: the texture of the paper up close, then a wider view of the flowers at teamLab. A small selection that lets the details and the page sequence speak.
